Few weeks ago, I accompanied a woman whose house in a slum had been razed down on a house search in Lagos. I had abandoned my work, with a pressing deadline, to get it done at the behest of my boss. We combed through several streets under hot sun, trekking exhaustingly over much sand, looking for potential houses. By the time I noticed how sweaty I had become, I was more concerned about ending the day with catching the rays of good news for the woman. I was not bothered about my own discomfort; I was concerned about her own happiness. Then it struck me. Here was I, unmindful of my deadline and distress, forgetting about myself because God has been taking me through the journey of selflessness for a time like that, for a woman like that.
When my boss met this woman, she was in a slum. She had fled Chibok with her family, at the height of Boko Haram’s killings and kidnaps. I can imagine how she felt when the world she had always known was disappearing before her. That she could no longer farm her land or milk her cows. That her daughters could no longer go to school because their mates had been kidnapped. I can imagine those lonely, painful, teary nights, times she was asking God where He was. I am sure when she decided to flee to Lagos, perhaps as an escapist move and/or a random flight of faith, she never knew God had prepared a man there for her. My boss was also living his life all these years, absorbing God’s dealings. God was all along instructing him in kindness and love and selflessness, preparing his heart, because someday he was going to meet another child of God that he would be the answer to her prayers. For God was indeed preparing us all to be her answer, in our own ways, when the time was right.
I feel like telling you this morning, that God is intentional about you and your future. It doesn’t look so now, but He does. Not only is He preparing you for someone, He is also preparing someone for you. Not only is He preparing some events for you, He is also preparing you for some events. Not only is He preparing some answers for you, He is also preparing you to be an answer.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6
It won’t be long when it will become clear why where you are and what you are going through fit into God’s ultimate picture for you. It is in the nature of man to live in the moment, be tempted to bring the future forward and agonize over every delayed hope. If man were to sit in council with God, he would challenge him about everything. He would even ask Him why He waited so long to send Jesus when many men were dying in their sins. He would go just about the same time to ask Jesus what the drama about His late arrival to Lazarus’ death was all about? Why don’t you just show up on time? Man wants it now. But to God, there is always the appointed time. He has a reason and He is intentional about it.
Will you like to trust Him and embrace the process?
